Carolyn Merchant is an environmental historian and her book
Reinventing Eden is in first turn aims to make people think about the modern ecological situation. She proposes ways to overcome the ecological crisis and presents her conception of Eden on the Earth. There are a few theories about the existence of Eden and possibilities to recover it.
Merchant gives her reasons why the myths of “lost Eden” led to the modern state of nature, degradation of our planet and people’s destructive attitude to the treasures of the earth. People started manipulating the environment and natural resources in the name of the so-called “Eden search”. Some centuries ago New World was considered to be Eden. “In the project of the transforming the New World into an Eden, first the Eastern forests were converted into the garden farms and later the Western deserts were irrigated to form fertile fields and pastures. Indians had burned the forest in order to plant corn, beans, and squash; for ease of passage; and to produce browse that attracted deer” (Merchant, 96). In this scenario people tried to conquer nature not taking into account its strength, complexity and chaotic character. People tried to create an artificial world neglecting natural laws. Nature has a set of rules every man should follow. Otherwise, the reaction of nature is unpredictable and numerous natural disasters are the best evidence of this fact.

The novel “Of Mice and Men” has a tragic ending which raises a number of ethical issues. In this respect, the question whether George did the right thing for Lennie or not remains unanswered. In fact, each reader can have his own view on this question, but, in all probability, George had good intentions while helping his friend to die. In actuality, Lennie did not have a choice whether to live or die, he rather had a choice of how to die and George took decision for Lennie and shot him. Obviously, George understood that the death is inevitable for Lennie, but he wanted to ease the last minutes of his friend’s life. Hence, he decided to shoot him dead and die in the matter of seconds, instead of being lynched by the outraged crowd that was likely to kill Lennie slowly and painfully. In such a context, motives of George’s act are obvious.
The development of hospitality industry is crucial for the economy growth of Jamaica because hospitality industry is the major industry of the country. In such a context, the recent progress of hospitality industry in Jamaica is quite logical since the local government encourages the development of hospitality industry and foreign direct investments. At the same time, the local hospitality industry is mainly oriented on tourists from the USA, which are the target customer group, although tourists from other countries are also visiting Jamaica regularly. No wonder, Jamaican hospitality industry attempts to adapt to the needs and preferences of American customers that makes it similar to American hospitality industry. On the other hand, it is local specificities of the local culture and lifestyle that make Jamaica so attractive for tourists and distinguish its hospitality industry from hospitality industry of the USA.
“The Road” is one of the prominent works written by Cormac McCarthy. The novel conveys a vision of the author of the post-apocalyptic world, where human nature is revealed in its extreme. In such a situation, the author explores the essence of human nature and juxtaposes primary instincts of humans to superior human values, even in the savage world, where there seems to be no place for humanism. At the same time, the author apparently believes in the supremacy of humanism and human values over primary instincts even when humans struggle for survival. Probably, the author attempts to convince the audience that it is in humanism the mankind can find salvation from all of its problems and challenges. In this respect, the post-apocalyptic world reminds the modern world where people are concerned with their own well-being only. In the epoch of consumerism, there is little room for humanistic ideals, help to people in need. Instead, consumerism and the struggle for a higher social status and wealth prevail in the modern society, which resembles the struggle of people depicted by McCarthy for survival in the post-apocalyptic world.
The lost generation and its problems are still relevant since the modern society is in a way similar to the society of the lost generation. These similarities as well as differences can be traced in works of major writers who belong to the lost generation and who wrote about the lost generation. In fact, it is obvious that the lost generation faced similar ethical dilemmas as the present generation, it faced the problem of the social inequality, but, fortunately, the modern generation has never experienced what the lost generation had – the world war.
