Passages from the Gospel of John and the Qur’an describe same events but use different means to pass their messages. John uses complicated structure in his narration. The language is high-flown in order to underline the importance of message which is passed. The main function of the text is to underline mighty power of God and stress on Him as the source and reason of everything that exists on the Earth. The main function of this passage is to underline unlimited power of God. The passage from the Qur’an is written in simpler language. It is more understandable. From the first lines the author distinguish the purpose of writing and this purpose is to pass important message to people: “This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, containing guidance for those who are mindful of God, who believe in the unseen, keep up the prayer, and give out of what We have provided for them” (Qur’an). The passage explains the meaning of Scripture given to Moses and underlines how important it is for all people. Two texts have different functions and stylistic means are determined by these functions. The passage from the Gospel of John aims to make people feel fear and respect to God. That is the reason theme of sin and punishment is very strong in this passage. Fear and obedience are central themes in Christianity and all scriptures are designed in a way which would make people fear God. The passage from Qur’an is aimed to teach people and give them important information. The author does not make an attempt to make people scared. He rather underlines the importance of information and appeals to rational side. It is also notable that the passage from the Gospel makes accent of sufferings of those who will not follow the path of faith. The passage from Qur’an underlines privileges of those who will follow the guidelines.
The image of Christ is also different in both passages. In the Gospel Jesus is described as the Savior of the mankind. John underlines that God sacrifices him in order to clean human sins. “He who believes in him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God” (The Gospel of John). In Qur’an Jesus is described rather like a messenger who can teach people to reach the Divine. As states Qur’an: “Remember when we gave Moses the Scripture, and the means to distinguish [right and wrong], so that you might be guided…We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit” (Qur’an). Both, the Epistle and the Qur’an contain guidelines for those who want to get salvation. In the Bible God is described like the source of everything and those who recognize Him may get salvation. In Quran importance of prayer and sharing is underlines. True prayer, true faiths and ability to share are described there as a way of salvation.
