Obstacles to Success

Often we encounter obstacles which we consider to be unsurpassable. Nevertheless, it is necessary just to make efforts and view our problems from a different angle to get through them. I know from my personal experience that we can very serious obstacles in our life, which prevent us from success, but we need to be bold to meet our goals. In fact, I believe that it is important to clearly define goals we want to meet, understand their importance and distinguish our personal problems and other obstacles from the goals we consider to be of the utmost importance. In this respect, I recall my graduation from the Wagner College, which was a turning point in my life since I believe that my life would be different if I failed to graduate and, what is more, there were moments when I sincerely believed that the graduation from the college was an attainable goal for me.
In fact, I understood that I needed to succeed at college because my education was essential for my professional career and my studies at college were an essential step toward my professional success. However, the Wagner College was located a few miles from my home. As a result, I had little opportunities to spend much time with my family. Otherwise, I would fail to graduate from the college because I had a choice: either to stay with my family, or keep studying at college. When I entered the college I did not think it could be a serious problem for me. However, I had changed my mind when my father got cancer. He died during my freshman year. It was a great personal tragedy for me and I suffered from remorse because I felt guilty of not being with my father when he was ill. I understood that he needed my support and I could not really concentrate on my studies while my father was suffering. Nevertheless, once I decided to talk to him about that since I was about to quite my college, but he told me about his great expectation about future professional career and about my entire life. As a result, I grew convinced that I need to learn to make my father’s dream come true. Anyway, I could maintain the permanent contact with him via phone and we talked regularly.
After his death, my problems had never stopped. During my junior year my fiancé died from ovarian cancer. I was really desperate. It seemed as if my life was over since people who were most important for me had died. Fortunately, I had my mother who proved to be very supportive and when I considered her own position I understood that she also suffered as much as I did but she managed to carry on her life overcoming her own problems since she also had poor health. In such a situation, I developed a philosophical view on life and death as concepts which we cannot influence or change. Therefore, I stuck to my priority – graduation and I focused all my efforts on this. In order to succeed at college and graduate successfully, I learned hard and spend a lot of time studying. In addition, practiced football, I was R.A. did a part-time job and school work.
At first glance, these activities could prevent me from successful graduation, but, in actuality, they distracted me and made my life more balanced since I was not too focused on studies or my thoughts about the past and problems I had. As a result, I achieved my goal and graduated successfully.
