The effectiveness of lesson plan is very important since it influences the overall effectiveness of the learning process. In such a situation, it is very important to develop well-organized and carefully prepared plan in order to meet the basic objectives of the lesson and develop skills and abilities of students, which can help them to enlarge their knowledge and which they can apply in their further academic activities and real life. However, each lesson plan is unique and, therefore, its effectiveness is different. In this respect, it is important to understand that teachers should meet the needs of their own students and they should develop their lesson plans in accordance to these needs as well as in accordance to the level of the development of their students. In such a context, it is possible to compare two lesson plans: “The Seven Wanders – Presentation” by P. Ravikumar and “Cooperation and Conflict -Ancient Greece: Athenians and Spartans” by John Anderson.
On analyzing two lesson plan, it should be said that both of them are focused on the cultural studies and exploration of different civilizations of the antiquity and their lifestyle. To put it more precisely, “The Seven Wanders” lesson plan has the following objectives: 1. Appreciate the “The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World” of the ancient world. 2. Discuss the architectures / natural formations which are considered the wonders of the modern world. 3. Create a presentation using PowerPoint to showcase what they have learnt. 4. Create a web page incorporating all the details of the class discussion for future discussion (Ravikumar, 2009). As for the lesson plan developed by Anderson , the author states that during the lesson groups of students will explore and evaluate interactions between two cultural groups and explain the factors that contribute to cooperation and to conflict. By researching examples of class structure, gender roles, beliefs, and traditions, students will evaluate the consequences, both positive and negative, of those interactions using higher order thinking skills. Students will develop multiple choice questions about Ancient Greece and generate a final product of multiple-choice questions. Questions are used in a Quiz Bowl format (Anderson, 2009).
At first glance, both lesson plans are similar in regard to the study of ancient culture, but the approaches teachers use during the lesson differ consistently. To put it more precisely, Ravikumar implies the involvement of the power point presentation as the overall goal of the lesson that means that the teacher wants to encourage students use such applications as power point and, thus, come prepared to use technologies in their everyday life. Moreover, this plan implies the presentation of the material students have learned. In contrast, the lesson plan developed by Anderson implies that students will create a quiz that means that they will not only evaluate the material they have learned but they will also brainstorm and prepare questions for the further reflection on the subject of the lesson. At the same time, both lessons imply the comparison of different pieces of culture that naturally encourage analytical thinking of students. However, Anderson’s lesson plan is more detailed.
Thus, in conclusion, it is possible to conclude that both lesson plans are quite effective and they contribute to the development of basic learning skills along with broadening of the cultural eyesight of students.
