Social position: immigrants vs “locals”
I decided to choose a topic connected with the social position of immigrants and original inhabitants of a country. In my opinion, this topic remained actual since people invented such things as “country” and “nationality”. It’s almost clear that the position of an original inhabitant is better than the immigrant’s one. The immigrants have fewer rights. Of course, there exist programs on helping them, but one is still regarded as alien if he’s an immigrant. So we have two opposite groups of people, and these groups both have tried to solve this problem, each in their way. Let’s analyze point by point how they did it.
Let’s first think on the reasons of such attitude. People like someone who is similar to them, this is a psychologically proved fact. Therefore if you have different skin color, different accent or different habits, you are automatically considered “an alien” until people get used to you. This is an instinct inside us. But people call themselves human because they have something above instincts: i.e. culture, religion and, most of all, the ability to think. Different governments of different countries have taken decisions to overcome “the instinct” and to help immigrants find a job, rent an apartment and generally settle in the environment. This is how one side solved the problem.

The immigrants’ solution is to be socially polite, to obey the laws and cultural traditions of their new country. There can be named plenty of immigrants that have made a valuable contribution into economy, culture, science etc. of their new country, and the social position of such people was high enough. So this is a solution – to prove that you can be useful for this country and this nation.
Living in a different country you can’t let yourself be worse than the locals because it will be noticed and stressed at once. The situation becomes a little bit different when immigrants from one or some countries unite into groups. This is another attempt to solve the problem. In such way it is easier to protect one’s rights. People from the same country often live together or next door, and preserve cultural traditions of their Motherland. This is good until they don’t disturb the locals. I believe this is impolite to cry here and there “My culture is 100 times better than yours!” to other people, especially you are not native in this country. Such occasions make the problem worse.
While there exists a difference between life levels in different countries, there will remain someone willing to relocate. Some governments do not accept non-native citizens (or non-citizens) to good-paid jobs. On one hand, it seems fair because the good-paid place can be occupied with someone native. But I think that since we are living in the market concurrence society, there has to be a concurrence in this sphere as well. And a fair decision will be to accept someone for a job because he is a better specialist. The governments of many countries have already done steps for this and invented some programs and laws. I believe that this is a tendency to spread over the whole world.
This is a topic to stay forever: always there exist some people who are totally against immigrants and there exist people who pay no attention to your origin. Perhaps in the future this problem will become less important because of the development of different means of communications. People travel more and more, get to know various places, nations, cultures. Therefore most people become more socially patient. But until the mankind unites in one group without language and cultural limits, this problem (I’d call it “social patience”) is going to appear.
