The History of the New York City Subway
The New York City subway has a long history and it is one of the oldest subway systems in the world but despite this fact it remains quite effective and reliable in the present days.
The subway was found in the early 20th century and the first underground line of the subway was opened in 1904 and the first elevated line was built 35 years later and it was the IRT Ninth Avenue Line. But in actuality it does not mean that these are the first structures of the subway system that were or still are currently used. As a result, IRT received the lines via original Contracts 1 and 2 and the Dual Contracts were used for the later extension and widening.
Nonetheless, in 1932 the first city-owned and operated Independent Subway System line opened. Initially it was intended to compete with the hegemony of private companies and in the same time it allowed to tear down some of the elevated railways. Soon the ‘appetite’ of the city had progressed and till 1940, the two private systems were bought by the city. However, such a monopoly of the city led to a bit unexpected results for some of the elevated lines were closed either immediately after the acquisition or soon after.
Naturally it was not an easy task to integrate the systems, which had existed separately for quite a long time and it was one of the main goals of the new owner for first years. Gradually several connections were built between the IND and BMT, which currently operate as a one division known as the Division B.
