The “Problem of pain” by Clive Staples Lewis written in 1940 has just only one aim: “to examine the suffering as the intellectual problem.” Teaching stability and patience is much bigger task, and I’m not intend to solve it, says Lewis.1 If this book is read by theologian he might understand that it was written by initiate, certainly except the last two chapters partly containing a mere conjectures and the author just retelling the ancient and orthodox doctrine. The author also excludes every principle that is not confessed by Christian.
What is this book about? All of his books after his returning to his previous belief in a variable degree describe the sense, pain and content of Christianity. He says that he started writing “The Problem of Pain” trying to answer the most typically question in the world: “If the God is so powerful why does he allow suffering.” The suffering obviously exist, and now it is the supreme objection to the Christian religion, the sufferings that take place in the universe created by the almighty Father. Surely Lewis supplied it with a great information material and he’s not confused in distracting to other significant problems of mental and physical being. Whatever in his “Problem of Pain” he shows the moral origin of Christianity.
The first chapter starts from the introduction: “Not so long ago, when I was an Atheist…” where he leads to the inner world of the whole problem of pain, and in the remaining nine chapters he examines the divine omnipotence, divine goodness, human condition, human and animal pain, and last, but not least, hell eternal suffering and heaven.
In the problem of pain he precisely scrutinizes general difficulties in accepting Christianity. He also follows the idea: “How could a good God allow pain to exist in the world?” or “Why should people worship the creator as a God, even though they would have no priviledges of that.” Lewis quietly formulates and solves the problem: “If God were good, He would make His creatures perfectly happy, and if He were almighty He would be able to do what he wished. But the creatures are not happy. Therefore God lacks either goodness, or power, or both. 2” It becomes the clarity explanation for the whole book.
The pain follows us for the whole of our life: when we are born, when we live making pain and at last when we die. Why should we believe to the bible which asserts that the “God is all-powerful” moreover we are not fully experienced whether to attribute the world to the activity of the God or not. The Christianity is the disastrous historical event. It’s not only a system which needs to be compared with the inconvenient fact of pain existence, but itself is a mere inconvenient fact3.
We can now see that not all things depend on God taking for example a cold climate of Arctic where the animal or human being such as Eskimo fells great but for Asian man this area is disastrous. Therefore appears a statement: “God allowed pain and suffering and seemed not to care whom they afflicted.2”
The next question is: “whether the God is all-loving or not?” The love can suffer, the love can forgive but it will never reconcile with the object unworthy of love…therefore the God that is Love will never reconcile with your sin ‘cause the ultimate sin’s not able to change but He can reconcile with your individuality because it can be regenerated.3 “When the Christian say that God loves a human being, they mean that he exactly love it but not that he shows an impartial and indifferent anxiety to it.
In the previous chapters the author shows that the possibility of pain lies in the very existence of the world where the souls can meet each other. And when the souls become wicked they won’t loose an opportunity to hurt each other, it is obviously a half of all human sufferings. Lewis says that not all sufferings were made by God. It is the human being that found lashes, prisons, slavery, guns, swords and bombs. But there are still sufferings that are the creator’s deeds. Why does he give a right for the worse people to torture innocent?
In the last chapters Lewis attends to the last examination of the problem of pain. He gives six theses in random order that are necessary for the completion of the whole examination of the problem of human pain.
This book “the problem of pain” Lewis ends with words: “The pain gives a cause for the manifestation of the heroism, and to ours delight people use this occasion very often.” Did he know that in 16 years he’ll observe the manifestation of this heroism from his suffering beloved wife, when he wrote this book in 1940?
