JOE TURNER ESSAY

JOE TURNER ESSAY
The story under consideration “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” by August Wilson concerns a lot of important social problems, but the central one is a painful problem of socialization and individual’s place in the society. The play is built up round the struggle in the United States African Americans faced with. The leading theme of the story is the African Americans’ longing to possess their identity, their burning desire to find the “song” of their own their destiny.
“Song” stands for the sense of personal spiritual connection. And one being in tune and harmony with his song is able to change completely the future life of his own. This “song” inspires… This “song” vivifies…
For the first time song is mentioned as “binding” one by the sorcerer Bynum. He is of the opinion that it can contribute men’s destinies and further putting them into touch. The main idea is disclosed through a plot and focusing on the black character, whose name was Herald Loomis.

It is the tireless search of the essence and depth of his song, it is significance which Loomis states of acceptance concerning his life, it is difficulties of his inner world he comes across with. Loomis’ drama lies in his aspiration of discovering his purpose of the life and his tendency to find connections in life as due to he slavery he has lost his family, his opinion, his aim, he has lost himself… The Herald Loomis’ drama seems to be hidden behind the unimportant facts the author describes and the reader has to read between the lines in order to grasp the author’s message. Thus once Loomis was told, “Now, I can look at you, Mr. Loomis, and see you a man who done forgot his song. Forgot how to sing it. A fellow forgets that and he forget who he is”. Loomis’ searching for his “binding song” can be equated with searching of spiritual and morally valuable points in himself. So in this way Loomis sets out in search of his wife. But subconsciously the real thing he has been looking for is the “Binding song” of his own, it is the tune of his soul, it is his identity beyond oppressive slavery.
Being persevering and possessing inexhaustible faith Loomis finds the song of his own self-sufficiency in spite of all mournful memories, anguish and suffering he came across with before. Searching for answers to vitally questions Loomis has found the salvation of his own.
