Memo

I’d like to offer you the review evaluating a business research project for an agricultural firm, Juicy Red Tomatoes. The research project was directed at investigation (1) the effectiveness and efficiency of its organizational structure, and (2) the selection and maintenance of managerial personnel.
There were used three types of research methods: quantitative, qualitative and mixed. In particular, these methods were represented with observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Here are some main characteristics of these types of research methods.
Observation is a qualitative method by which an individual or individuals gather firsthand data on programs, processes, or behaviors that are studied. It provides researchers with an opportunity to collect data on a wide range of behaviors, to capture a great variety of interactions, and to openly explore the evaluation topic.
The reason this method was used was in the following: it provides direct information about behavior of individuals
And groups, good opportunities for identifying unanticipated outcomes, permits researcher to enter into and understand situation. The observation exists in natural, unstructured, and flexible setting.
An interview is “a formal face-to-face meeting, especially, one arranged for the assessment of the qualifications of an applicant, as for employment or admission…. A conversation, as one conducted by a reporter, in which facts, or statements are elicited from another.”(the American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition). Interview is a mixed method, as the researcher can collect quantitative data as well as qualitative data.
This method insures well the effectiveness and efficiency of the organizational structure, and the selection and maintenance of managerial personnel, because interviews are flexible and participatory. They are flexible because the interviewer has the freedom to change some questions or the asking order of the questions according to the reactions of the person. Finally, interviews are participatory since they require both the interviewer and the participant to join in an interactive conversation.
The questionnaire is the most commonly used quantitative method of gathering information. Using of the questionnaire insures the effectiveness of the research project. For they are a less expensive way to reach more people, including people at some distance, they avoid interviewer bias, guiding, and cues that can impact the validity and reliability of the data collection, and their response quality is better because respondents may gather and consult sources needed to respond well.
Using these three types of research methods was very effective, as they are considered to be complementary and allow the researchers to investigate various sides of organizational structure, managerial personnel.
While analyzing the findings of the business research project, three main problems to be corrected were elicited in organization structure. The first one was dysfunction of structure, regarded as the result of ineffective delegation of authority and responsibility as well as of the lack of communication. In order to improve this situation, the recommendations are the following.
There should be created the proper control system, necessary for securing the manager when delegating important authority to his employees, clear statements about employees’ responsibilities, tasks and their limits of authority, manager’s confidence in employees, respect and no groundless critics. These factors ought to insure efficiency of the delegation. Speaking of poor communication, the fact that the efficient work of organization besides employees’ professionalism, motivation, mood to a great degree depends on the quality of their relationships is quite evident. So to insure the efficiency of communication, such recommendations can be used, as: to organize some psychological trainings, role-plays, business plays, that would help the members of organization understand each other, find out something new about themselves and their collaborators and this fact could unite them. Some kinds of group working can be recommended: meetings, conferences, seminars, group discussions, brain storming. This type of work presupposes discussions of some problems in group, that could be used for lessening of interpersonal tension and make the staff closer to each other.
The second problem concerns the qualification of managerial personnel that does not allow it to perform efficiently and effectively. The improvement of professional skills can be achieved by the organization and carrying out various educational programs, which include control of mastering knowledge and forming necessary skills, personal consulting of the management, organization of lectures, seminars, trainings, work groups and so on. It would be better if the educational programs were worked out with regard to the needs of this organization. All these measures are supposed to improve the quality of work as well as well-being of the organization.
The third problem implies the absence of scientifically established compensation criteria. And this is the fact creating substantial inequity between production and compensation. To resolve compensation problem, a reliable wage administration is needed. There are some recommendations, based on the fact that there are two kinds of compensation: material and moral. Speaking of the material one, the managerial personnel should provide the employees not only with fees, but also with the opportunity of promotion, receiving memorable presents, certain privileges. The moral compensation includes declaration of personal services: gratitude, thanks, giving some ranks, honorary titles, etc. The realization of this complex of compensation can satisfy any employee of the organization and make their work more effective, as they could feel wanted and their work highly rated.
