Analytical Chemist

Analytical Chemist
My dream has always been to become an analytical chemist. This profession gives many opportunities to learn about our world, make new findings important for the whole humanity. I think it is profession of the future. Chemists will make the most important inventions in the future, such as treatments for currently incurable diseases, substitutions for gas and oil. Workers of chemical industry will creates the ways to eliminate the pollution of global environment. No other industry can keep up with chemistry in the epoch-making discoveries.

I want to be able to do my share and make an important contribution to chemistry. I am aware of how difficult it might be to achieve this goal. But a well-rounded education will unlock the gates of opportunity—improving my knowledge and skills, helping me to become a more effective scientist, adept analyst, and problem-solver, helping me to clarify complex issues. University of California has the resources and experience to give me this education.

I already have the foundation for the further studying. I have successfully taken several chemistry classes in the high school in Korea. Both of my parents used to work in the industry of chemistry. From them I have acquired the interests in this subject and some knowledge as well. Since I was almost 14 years old I have read numerous magazines and books devoted to chemistry, famous scientists, and new inventions. During my studying in school I have also helped at chemistry laboratory in Korea. Very often I have volunteered at the institutions where my parents worked. The job I was doing was not very significant, but I have acquired much knowledge there. I was allowed to observe performance of experiments I got familiar with the fundamentals of applied chemistry. My volunteering in the laboratory in Korea has also strengthened my assurance that I wont to devote my career to Chemistry.

I have interest also in other subjects, especially that are connected with chemistry. For several times I have taken part in the national mathematics contest for two-year colleges, AMATYC. In this contest twice I have won second places and twice first. Last year I was nineteenth on the national level.

I am also very interested in Biology and Physics. I am sure that my interest in these subjects will be beneficial for my future career in Chemistry. I am sure that every person should be well-rounded. That is why I am also interested in history, politics, and literature. I am extremely motivated to learn everything, not only chemistry and sciences, and to improve myself. Which I believe is a sign of maturity of any person.

My different interests and hobbies do not draw me away form my main educational interest and hopefully future occupation. One of my main hobbies is to conduct chemical experiments. So far they all have been successful. I have some equipment at home for the experiments. My parents helped me in the beginning to acquire some simple chemical reaction. I have been studying with great persistence and curiosity ever since. I have read a big amount of literature devoted to this subject. Now I am able to conduct more serious experiments then before.

Since I am interested in history as well, I have studied with great interest the history of the chemical science. I have learned about famous scientists who made their important contribution to the science. The life and work of the scientists inspire my interest in the subject, my further studying, and improvement. I find it necessary to study the achievements of different chemists to make my own inventions and improvements basing on their works.

Most of my friends tell that my strongest qualities are persistent, dedication to the task I am doing, and effective interaction with people. I am very flexible with all different personalities and confident with my own communicative abilities. I am always very diplomatic with people during the debates and discussions. I am sure that communication helps to demonstrate leadership abilities. I am very open and friendly to everyone regardless of race, sex, age, and religion. I know based on my experience that I can easily adapt to an unfamiliar environment and new relationships. I easily communicate and collaborate with different types of people. I am sure these qualities will definitely help me when I will start my education at the University of California. I can easily become a member of a group. I have excellent skills and experience of working on a group project. I am very responsible person and can easily become a leader of a group. I have been traveling and learned to get along with people with different ideas and backgrounds. And that probably was the best part of my experience. I have developed friends not only with Americans, but with people from many other countries.

I was born and studied at school in Korea. I believe I have changed since I came to the U.S. I was challenged to think about my country and my own ideas. From my experience here I have gained confidence in myself, and found that I can do things I never thought I could do. I have learned about America, its people, and culture, and shared my knowledge about Korea. I realize that each place has something special about it and that no place on the Earth is perfect. We may lose one thing when leaving a country, but we certainly gain something else in its place. I learned to get along with people with different ideas and backgrounds. As a result of my experience I can better explain the strengths and weaknesses of Korea and those of the U.S. Now I am able to formulate ideas from two distinct perspectives. Different cultures have different things to offer me: the patience, perseverance, and hard-work ethic of the East, and creativity, pioneering attitude, and spirit of volunteerism from America. I have been taught how courage, faith, concentration, and determination in combination with high ethical and moral values can help me to achieve my goals and realize my dreams.
