The process of making a movie is always very complicated and as a rule is accompanied by a number of difficulties, which may be typical for cinematography only. The number of difficulties dramatically increase of a movie is making from a book, because along with the fact that a movie and a book represent different arts they are also quite difficult to serve as equal means of what is conveyed in a movie and in a book and vice versa.

Basically there may be found several principal difficulties, which may be divided into two big groups. The first group is the problems of relevance of main concepts and ideas of a book and of a movie and the other group of difficulties include basically technical problems.


Among the first group of difficulties may be named the problem of personality of a director of a movie and an author of a book. In fact it is really a very big problem that a director can have an absolutely different view on a book than its author has. Actually, a director is just a reader and as any other reader he/she may interpret a book in his/her particular way, while an author naturally has some ideas to convey to the readers which should be universally understood and this is where the difficulty arise because a director may convey these ideas in a different way or even emphasize ideas that are secondary or unimportant at all for the author of a book.

Another difficulty that may be also referred to the same groups is the problem of correspondence of the actors, starring in the film to the characters depicted in the book. It is obvious that an actor should fully realize the character he/she plays but it is really a big problem to find an actor that would be a cinematographic twin of a character from a book. Moreover, sometimes actors do not even attempt to resemble bookish characters. At this respect the role of a film director is also very important as well as the personality of an actor because he/she may perceive a character differently from the book’s author point of view.

As for technical problems, it should be said that these problems are quite different. For instance, it is really difficult to convey in a movie the ambiance of a book. Many directors and screenwriters of movies simply omit some details from a book in order to make the film more dynamic or more persuading.

Furthermore, some books depict timeline that can hardly be equally depicted in a film. In such a situation creators of a movie should sometimes restrain time limits and a viewer has an impression that time in the movie is compressed compared to a book or vice versa when a movie is based on a short story than some new details may appear and time line of the movie naturally increases.

Finally, it is necessary to remember that a director of a movie and an author of a book has to use different means of expression. What is meant here is the fact that a reader of a book deals with verbal language and he perceives the story in the same way while in a movie verbalization is not sufficient and it is widely supported and sometimes overwhelmed by visualization. In such a way a book and a movie are quite different and probably it is possible to say that at this respect a movie is richer than a book. At the same time it is necessary to remember that it is not always to convey visually in a movie what has been said verbally in a book.

Thus, in conclusion it should be said that making a movie from a film deals with a number of problems, among which may be pointed out the problem of correspondence of a director’s views to the views of an author, the correspondence of actors to characters they play, time relevance, the problem of full conveyance of a book’s detail and ambiance in a movie and difficulty of conveyance of verbal information basically through visualization.
