KINDS OF UNIVERSITY PAPERS
There is a wide variety of university papers which are common to students work in different subjects. 1. Critical Analyses and Analytical Summaries
Literature review is one of the most basic exercises in any scientific program. The analytical summary only presents the essential elements of text; the critical analysis also provides additional evaluation.
a) Analytical Summary seeks to provide a clear and concise description of a read text, usually without an assessment or analysis. The content of the text, its theme, main issue or research problem, logic, hypotheses, arguments and conclusions – all these provide the subjects for review.
b) Critical Analysis presents the main argument of the text, the same as review does, but also assessing its context, strengths and weaknesses. Critical Analysis requires attention to accuracy, as well as a certain “distance” from the subject matter, which would allow you to consider all the conditions behind the text's development. Your critique may contain two aspects: the internal analysis, based on the elements of the work itself and the external analysis, which takes into account any pertinent factors from outside of the text.
2. Essay studies a subject with a certain depth of inquiry. This often involves presenting an argument, or analyzing an event, or studying a problem or making a commentary on a given assertion. The essay is the result of reason and critical reflection, and does not necessarily depend on extensive research for new information.
Professors may choose a list of essay subjects, or allow students to choose their own, keeping certain criteria in mind. When choosing your topic, take into consideration your personal interests and background knowledge about the subject. Always read all instructions carefully in order to complete what is expected from you.
Once you know your subject, begin to write down a list of ideas, facts and relevant examples. You can assist yourself to think creatively by asking a series of questions: What? Who? Where? When? How?
