The Story "The Old Man and the Sea" (1952), for which Hemingway won the Nobel Prize, has different interpretations by the critics. By one statement it showed us the heroic origin of a man. By other statements this story stressed the theme of loneliness and suffering. The reason lies in the contradictory duality and allegory inherent in the very bright product of Hemingway. Summarizing and abstracting the main ideas of the book, the writer gives readers the right to judge what he meant and what content is put into all the images. The hero of the old man Santiago suffered some setbacks. A sail of Santiago’s boat becomes the symbol of bad luck chasing the old man, "all in patches of burlap. But Hemingway, emphasizing Santiago’s age, says that the old man has merry eyes of a man who does not surrender.
The description of Santiago’s fight with a big fish is although ambiguous. We hear a well known fatalism in words of the old man, when he came into the fight with his opponent: "The fish - he called softly, - I will not leave you until I die". Straining to the utmost force, the old man continues to fight and ultimately defeats the big fish. He says that man is not created in order to suffer defeat - man can be destroyed, but it can not be defeated.
The old man does not remain inactive when his fish is attacked by sharks. Although he was old and emaciated and his hands were bruised, he continues to struggle. After a knife, tied to the oar is broken Santiago fails to save the fish, but he remains undefeated. "Whom are you defeated by, old man?” - He asked himself ...”By no one!” he replied – “I have just gone too far out to the sea". In "The Old Man and the Sea" there is no tragic ending like in other Hemingway's books. Exhausted, but undefeated Santiago reaches the port. He is saved. His boy was waiting for him. The boy said the old man that now they would go fishing together, that he should learn a lot from him. The final of the story leaves the prospect of further work opened; it is associated with a belief in man's creative powers. This is not withdrawal from life. Strong thread continues to link Santiago with people. And the old man is not an alien for the people.
