Descriptive Essays

A descriptive essay uses the senses to describe something to the reader. It uses the senses such as smell, hear, taste, or feel. It is more than telling a person something. It uses words to write a verbal picture. It does not just tell the reader about an object, but the words describe what the writer wants to show. Using nouns it allows the reader to see. Using verbs gives them the sense of feeling. A descriptive essay may be objective or even subjective. The writer uses tone, diction, and attitude to get the message to the reader. The purpose of a descriptive essay is to get specific and concrete details to the reader about an object or place.

A descriptive essay is aimed at describing an object, phenomenon or an event. The process of description should contain an introduction of examples, the use of expressive language, and comparison with some other things, a description of personal sensations about the described object or any other method that shows the features of the described object, phenomenon or event in a vivid and comprehensible way.

While writing a descriptive essay, be sure to remember that almost every object, phenomenon, or event can be viewed from different angles by different individuals. For this reason, be sure to start with the obvious characteristics of the described object, and then shows so many of its specific characteristics as possible. Extremely important to keep the reader's attention by introducing of the most interesting features of the subject and expression the most exciting characteristics of object. The writer has to show his own opinion on the issue and thus create the impression of reader's.

Introductory paragraph should include a brief description of the subject, starting with general features, and continuing with some specific and refined statement of the thesis. The sections of the body should include a more detailed description of the respective characteristics, and the conclusion should summarize the stated information or restate the previously formulated thesis with consideration of peculiarities stated within paragraphs of the body.

Your descriptive essay should be written on interesting topic, paying attention to the audience preferences. For example, when you write a descriptive essay about the car for designers, it is better to tell about car's design, but when you describe it for mechanical crew, better pay attention to its technical characteristics and peculiarities. Also, when you describe the car for regular customers, you can mention both technical and design issues, but mostly pay attention to its gas consumption, price, durability and some other attractive characteristics. In other words, the writer of the essay should use the words and descriptions that will be interesting to his audience.
