A division and classification essay takes a large subject and organises it so the reader can see it clearly. Division splits one thing into its parts; classification sorts many things into groups. Most assignments use both.
Division or classification?
- Division starts with a single subject and breaks it down – a company into its departments, a course into its modules, an engine into its systems.
- Classification starts with many items and groups them – forms of renewable energy, types of leadership, categories of student debt.
One principle, applied consistently
This is the rule that decides the grade. Choose a single basis for sorting and hold to it throughout. Classifying restaurants by cuisine is coherent; classifying them into Italian, Thai, expensive and family-run is not, because two different principles are mixed and a restaurant could belong to three groups at once.
Good categories are also complete – everything in the subject fits somewhere – and mutually exclusive, so nothing fits in two places. If an item belongs in two categories, the principle is wrong.
Structure
- Introduction – the subject, the principle you are sorting by, and why that principle is useful.
- One section per category, in a deliberate order: size, importance, familiarity or chronology.
- Each section defines the category, gives examples and explains what distinguishes it from its neighbours.
- Conclusion – what the arrangement reveals that a list would not.
Make the scheme earn its place
A classification essay is only worth writing if the categories teach the reader something. Sorting by an obvious property produces an obvious essay. Sorting by a property that cuts across the obvious one – classifying study techniques by the kind of memory they exercise rather than by subject – produces an essay with a point.
Common mistakes
- Mixed principles inside one scheme.
- Overlapping categories that leave the reader unsure where things belong.
- Too many categories. Three to five is usually the limit before the essay becomes a catalogue.
- Uneven treatment – two pages on the first category and a paragraph on the last.
- No conclusion beyond “there are several types”.
