The article raises a number of extremely important problems mainly related
to the sphere of education which are particularly significant for the modern
democratic society. At the beginning the author reveals the essence of the modern
society, its structure and its impact on individual’s identity. In fact,
the author stands on the ground that the formation of identity is extremely
dependent on the socio-cultural environment of an individual and it is obvious
that one of the key ideas of the article is the belief that there is a combined
impact of inherited and acquired knowledge, skills and norms that shape individual’s
identity. At the same time, the author emphasizes that individual’s identity
is programmed but not predetermined implying that humans are conscious of the
process of the formation of their identity and both external and internal influences
on the personality.
However, the external socio-cultural impact, being significant, imposes certain
restrictions on a personality. To put it more precisely, the social inequality
engendered by class division of the society provokes intolerance in human relations
making some classes superior to others because of the differences existing between
them. It is very important that the author extrapolates this problem on the
sphere of education where it is particularly obvious. In such a situation, children
from lower-class families are in the most deprived position because of their
difference, notably the cultural, social and even language difference since
their language is different from the standard language that is used in school
and that creates great problems to academic success of children from low-class
families.
As a result, the author postulates the basic principles that should be applied
in order to ameliorate the current situation in education and make schools really
democratic. To put it more precisely, the author insists that the teachers’
most important responsibility is to make children feel really equal and not
been deprived. It is recommended to make children of lower-class are not worse
and their language is also unique and beautiful that will make them feel equal
and provide them a tool in their struggle for their rights and social position.
Obviously, the problems discussed in the article are extremely important because
it teaches professionals what the current problems of schools and what ways
to make the school really democratic are.
